Owen Williams touched the ball four times in the third quarter and produced 20 points, leading the Lake Forest High School football team to a 25-9 win at Libertyville on Friday.
It gave the Scouts a share of the North Suburban Conference Lake Division title with Lake Zurich and Stevenson.
Libertyville led 9-0 at halftime on a 29-yard TD run by sophomore Conor Simpson and a 24-yard field goal by Austin Williams.
But in the thsird quarter, Williams scored on runs of 30, 40 and 90 yards on his only carries of the period. His fourth touch produced a two-point PAT run.
Lake Forest (7-2) also got a 46-yard field goal from Baylor Broughton.
Scouts QB Andrew Clifford completed 8-of-15 passes for 37 yards, as he filled in for injured started Jordan Beck (injured elbow).
Beck is expected to be under center next week when the Scouts open the playoffs.
“He’s ready,” said Lake Forest coach Chuck Spagnoli, who actually got Beck into the game on the last play of the game. The senior QB handed off to Scott Powell.
Clifford’s favorite target was Luke Bernardi, who caught four passes for 38 yards.
As for Williams, Spagnoli said, “I told the kids at halftime our best players have just got to step up, and our best players did.”
While Williams was running wild on offense (20 carries, 233 yards, 3 TDs), Lake Forest’s shut down Libertyville in the entire second half. The Scouts forced sixth three-and-outs in the final 24 minutes.
Thomas Kutschke had a monster day on defense for LF. He had a 6-yard tackle for loss and a 6-yard quarterback sack. The junior D-lineman led the team with nine tackles. Richard Daniel also recorded a sack, while Brandt Pfeifer, Nick Keefe, Tyler Funk and Benjamin Warren were in on tackles for loss. Warren also came up with an interception.
“We told the team to stop worrying about what we think we are doing and just do what we know what to do,” Spagnoli said.
For the game, Simpson rushed 13 times for 62 yards and the one score.
Quarterback Jack Deichl completed 11-of-19 for 82 yards and a pick.
Both teams will be in the playoffs, as Libertyville will qualify with its 5-4 record. Playoff pairings will be announced on Saturday night.
