Lincoln-Way Central cruises past Corsairs

FRANKFORT

The offense scored two touchdowns while the defense and special teams added one each and Lincoln-Way Central took down Carmel 31-6 in a season opener Friday night in Frankfort.

East’s Tom Fuessel had to patiently wait his turn last year while star quarterback Blake Winkler finished a career that earned him Gatorade Illinois Football Player of the Year honors.

Fuessel’s debut was worth the wait. The senior quarterback, who attempted just four passes in 2011, was 3-of-4 for 71 yards and added nine carries for 74 yards before leaving with 8:41 left in the third with what appeared to be a cramp.

Fuessel avoided several tackles and fired a 61-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Duffin, then added a 54-yard TD run to highlight a 24-point second quarter. Kyle Langenderfer grabbed a blocked punt in the Corsairs end zone for another score and Anthony Sciarini booted a 32-yard field goal to help bust the game open at 24-6 before the halftime break.

The Griffins defense was whistled for four 15-yard penalties in the third quarter but lineman Cody Hoffman stripped Carmel running back Tom Serio of the ball and rumbled 49 yards for a score in that period.

Griffins backup quarterback Jordan Wirtz left the game with 10:21 remaining with a hand injury and third-string QB Brett Fuessel took over the rest of the way.

The Corsairs will be trying to bounce back on Friday, when they take on Glenbard North in their home opener at 7:30 p.m.

Glenbard North also dropped its season opener — a 42-41 decision to visiting Batavia.
