Brandon Motzel and Augustana College.
Now that’s what you call a perfect fit.
Being smart, athletic and standing 6-foot-7 has served Motzel well.
For top Division III men’s basketball programs, this Carmel Catholic senior center was that big man in demand.
Illinois Wesleyan, among others, was hot on his trail.
Similar to Lake Zurich’s Mirko Grcic (6-6), who selected Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, Motzel has a chance to develop into something super special at Augustana.
The Buffalo Grove native, who has eye-popping ability, capped off his senior year by earning all-league honors in the East Suburban Catholic Conference. He made all-tournament in a tough field at the Wheeling Hardwood Classic.
“He carried us the whole year,” said Carmel coach Tim Bowen. “When he had a good night, we had a good night. We had a lot of young kids out there, and he did a really good job of guiding them.”
Motzel wound up averaging 13.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. He blocked 53 shots.
Meanwhile, Carmel guard Connor Jordan will play at Coe College in Iowa.
Jordan, who missed the first part of the season with mononucleosis, averaged 7.8 points per game. He shot 71 percent from the foul line.
