Edgar Nieto, of Mundelein, a student at Dominican University was honored as a Student Laureate by the Lincoln Academy of Illinois during special ceremonies at the State Capitol in Springfield. The following Mundelein High School seniors have been named semifinalists in the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program: Stephen Slaughter and John Syme will be eligible for a number of scholarships offered through the program should they become finalists. North Shore’s first recovery high school to open in Lake Bluff

The area’s first high school for teens recovering from alcohol and drug addiction, eating disorders or other mental health issues will open in Lake Bluff June 3. Newport Academy Day School will be the first recovery high school serving Chicago’s North Shore teens, age 15 to 19.

Libertyville native Cheryl Robinson earned a Doctoral Scholarship Award from the Illinois Academy of Audiology. The annual honors go to outstanding students in an Illinois Au.D. or Ph.D. program. Winners are selected based on their potential to make a significant contribution to the field of audiology; academic accomplishment; school and community activities, personal motivation, and leadership potential. After obtaining her degree bachelors degree from Illinois State University in deaf education, Robinson was employed for two years as a teacher of total communication. Her time working with students with hearing impairment motivated her to pursue her long-term goal of a degree …

LIBERTYVILLE — Although Libertyville High School’s mock trial team didn’t win one of the top three spots at a competition this month in Rolling Meadows, team members say it’s the experience that counts most. Mock trial teams exist at many high schools through sponsorship from the Illinois Bar Association and other local bar groups. Teams are given information on a real-life case. They study it, work out a strategy, then compete at tournaments where the case is “tried” in a real courtroom before an actual judge. At this month’s competition, 24 teams were in the running. VERNON HILLS — The agenda at a board meeting for Community High School District 128 changed drastically this week, when administrators and attendees were surprised by students performing a song from the musical “Les Miserables.” The flash mob-style performance was meant as a thank-you to the district for supporting the fine arts at both Vernon Hills and Libertyville High Schools. Cheerleading squad takes the floor Fifteen College of Lake County students, former rivals at high school cheerleading competitions, have formed a new Lancer Cheerleading Club, which gaåve its first public performance at men’s and women’s home basketball games on Jan. 17. Teresa Aguinaldo, interim executive director of Student Life, said she is excited about the revival of cheerleading at CLC after a long hiatus. (The college had a pom-pom squad several years ago and an athletic department-sponsored cheerleading squad in the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s). GRAYSLAKE — The College of Lake County has scheduled a candidate forum for its Board of Trustees race before the April 9 election. The forum will be held from noon to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 6 in Room C005 (C Wing Auditorium) of the Grayslake campus, 19351 W.
