STS Foundation, a local non-profit exchange program, invites Mundelein, Proviso and Vernon Hills families to host international exchange students for the 2011-2012 school year. The teenage students come from over 30 countries and will attend local high schools. The students have their own spending money and insurance. Host families are responsible for meals, a place to sleep and a nurturing environment. Applications for the First Annual Mundelein Arts Festival are being accepted by the Mundelein Community Connection. Civil War Nurse Clara Barton: 7 p.m. July 20 - Historian Leslie Goddard brings Civil War Nurse Clara Barton to life in this program that focuses on her childhood and Civil War work. She was the first woman to serve as a nurse on the front lines. This program is one in a series of programs planned at the library to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the start of the Civil War.
Why the Civil War Matters: 1 p.m. July 21- Author Robert Hicks, a leading authority and interpreter of the continuing relevance of the Civil War, will present the talk Why the Civil War Matters. He is the author of Widow of the South and A Separate Country. Copies of his books will be provided by the Lake Forest Book Store.

Nike and SWALCO (Solid Waste Agency of Lake County) have partnered to bring Nike’s Reuse-A-Shoe Program to Lake County. Reuse-A-Shoe collects worn-out athletic shoes of any brand. A collection box for used athletic shoes is located in the Sullivan Community Center, 635 N. Aspen Drive, Vernon Hills. No metal parts including grommets or cleats will be allowed. Tree donations: Residents and neighbors can honor a special person or commemorate a birthday or anniversary by donating a tree in a District park. Trees are sold at cost; with prices ranging from $225-$475 depending on the type of species selected which include shade trees and evergreens. Trees can be personalized with a bronze plaque, which is also sold at cost.
