Trader Joe’s coming to Libertyville

Updated: March 5, 2013 1:28PM

LIBERTYVILLE — After many residents spent years campaigning online for a Trader Joe’s, the company announced it will open a Libertyville location at 1600 South Milwaukee Ave.

Formerly the site of a Frank’s Nursery & Crafts, the site will be only the second Trader Joe’s in Lake County.

The Libertyville location will be approximately 12,500 square feet, according to a press release from Trader Joe’s. Ground breaking is slated to take place in April.

In addition to the traditional decor found in its stores, the store will feature art celebrating the neighborhood.

Residents reacted strongly to the news on Facebook Thursday morning, with more than 1,000 people sharing the announcement within hours.

“The visible community support and demand helped make this happen! Go Team 60048!” Libertyville Trustee Jim Moran wrote on the site.

“Trader Joe’s listened to all their fans who asked them to open a store in Libertyville,” a post on the MainStreet Libertyville Facebook page said.

Resident Linda Strid also took to the site to hail the “great news.”

“Quality food, good prices and jobs for the local community,” she wrote.

Residents have passionately campaigned for the store in the past by making numerous requests through the Trader Joe’s website. A page on Facebook was also set up and was very popular, Libertyville economic development coordinator Heather Rowe said.

Rowe echoed residents’ excitement.

“We are thrilled Trader Joe’s is coming,” she said. ”Our residents have been asking for this for years.”

Rowe added that Trader Joe’s will be a good compliment to other stores in the village.

Trader Joe’s brands itself as a store that carries a unique assortment of products at reasonable prices, and the chain introduces approximately a dozen new items every week.

Residents will be able to learn about current and new products in The Fearless Flyer, a mailer that will be sent to area households. The Flyer is known by Trader Joe’s fans for their humorous and irreverent item descriptions.
