VW Credit, Inc. has begun construction on a 30,000-square-foot expansion of its Libertyville facility, which officials say could mean an additional 150 jobs in the community over the next few years.
Libertyville and Volkswagen Credit officials attended an official ground-breaking event Friday at the Libertyville facility at 1401 Franklin Boulevard.
Tom Keefe, communications specialist for VW Credit, Inc., said the expansion, which is slated for completion in March of 2013, will almost double the size of the existing facility.
VW Credit, Inc. is a subsidiary of Volkswagen Group of America and provides financial products and services to Volkswagen and Audi dealers and their customers throughout the United States.
“At a time when a lot of companies are downsizing or seeing stagnant growth, Volkswagen in the US and globally is having a fantastic year,” said Keefe. “With that growth comes the need to expand service to our customers and this addition will help us to do that.”
Andrew Stuart, president and CEO of VW Credit, said the company has been in Libertyville since 1999 and acquired the land for the expansion about three or four years ago.
“The main thing that’s nice for the village of Libertyville is we’re going to be adding 150 new jobs (through 2018),” he said. The Libertyville facility currently employs nearly 500 employees.
Stuart said the expansion will also create a better working environment for employees, with additional work stations and conference rooms, a larger dining area and fitness center and parking to accommodate 650 vehicles.
Mayor Terry Weppler and other village officials attended the ground-breaking ceremony.
“We’re very thrilled that Volkswagen Credit has decided to do a major expansion in Libertyville,” said Weppler. “They had a number of locations they could have chosen and they choose Libertyville.”
