Police set to host self-defense class

The Mundelein Police Department is hosting a free class for women 18 and over who are interested in learning self-defense tactics. Seventeen year olds with parental permission will also be allowed to attend.

The class will be held on Tuesday nights between 6 to 8 p.m. beginning Feb. 21 and ending March 13 at the Mundelein Police Department, 221 North Lake St.

Students should wear loose fitting workout clothes. The class requires some physical activity.

Space is limited to 30 participants. Persons can call (847) 968-3770 to register.

Libertyville schools rank in top 10

Four Libertyville Elementary District 70 schools ranked in the top 10 for the 23rd Annual Lake County Elementary School Fall Attendance Week. The Top Ten Award Ceremony luncheon was held on Jan. 30 to honor the schools.

Ranking number one for “large” schools in the county was Highland Middle School. It tied for the top slot for large elementary schools with 980 students for a 97.63 percent attendance rate.

Ranking in the top 10 slots for schools smaller than 450 was fifth place Copeland Manor School with 400 students with a 98.07 percent attendance rate and coming up in seventh place was Adler Park School with 262 students and a 97.94 percent attendance rate. For medium-sized elementary schools, Butterfield School tied with several schools for seventh place in the top 10 with 531 students with a 97 percent attendance rate.

All Lake County elementary schools are eligible to be recognized by the Regional School Superintendent for attendance week, which ran from Oct. 24-28 this year. The Libertyville schools were represented by principals and students on the school Student Council elected board. They were presented with certificates of achievement at the celebratory luncheon.

Business program to be held at Cook Library

In collaboration with the GLMV Chamber of Commerce, Cook Memorial Public Library District is hosting Dennis Ryan of World Equity Group at noon on Feb. 29 at the Cook Park Library; 413 N. Milwaukee Ave., in Libertyville as part of their “Minding Your Business” series of programs.

Ryan will lead an informative session on how to plan for the death, disability or retirement of the small business owner to ensure that their company survives and thrives. Registration is required. Call (847) 362-2330 or go to webres.cooklib.org to register.

Osteoporosis screenings to be offered

Rosalind Franklin University Health System staff will provide free osteoporosis education and screenings for women on Monday, Feb. 20, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Central Lake YMCA, 700 Lakeview Parkway, Vernon Hills. The screenings will precede the regularly scheduled visit of the health system’s mobile health unit there that day.

The program will provide education, risk assessment and bone density screening for osteoporosis. There will be a group educational session covering risk factors and what can be done to help prevent the morbidity and mortality associated with osteoporosis. Rosalind Franklin staff will identify women at risk and provide bone density screenings to those at risk.
