Millner, Thompson do well in pageant
The Miss Northern Suburbs Pageant was held on Jan. 21 at the Hilton Garden Inn Mettawa/Lake Forest.
Congratulations to Kaitlyn Millner, Miss Northern Suburbs 2012 from Mundelein and Sophia Thompson, Miss Northern Suburbs’ Princess 2012 from Libertyville.
The 2012 Miss Northern Suburbs titleholders will be competing in Marion in June for the chance to be Miss Illinois 2012, Miss Illinois’ Outstanding Teen 2012 and Miss Illinois’Outstanding Pre-Teen 2012.
Tickets on sale for VHHS play
Vernon Hills High School’s theatre department will present its winter play, Sideways Stories From Wayside School. This family-friendly show is based on the popular Wayside School novels by Louis Sachar.
Performances are Feb. 9,10, 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Studio Theatre. Call ( 847)-932-2283 for more details or to reserve tickets. Tickets may also be purchased at the door or during lunch hours the week of Feb. 6. Student/Child tickets are $4, adult tickets are $5.
Athletes earn gold medals
On Jan. 7, the Special Recreation Association of Central Lake County’s (SRACLC) snowshoeing team competed in the Special Olympics District Snowshoeing tournament.
Despite there being no snow and the usually high temperatures, the athletes came ready to compete in their races in hopes of advancing to the State Winter Games. The SRACLC team consisted of fourteen members which competed in the 50, 100, 200, 800 meters races and a 4x100 meter relay.
Chris Walti of Libertyville and Mitchell Glazer of Vernon Hills led the team, each bringing home gold in all their events. Chris ran the 50 meter, 100 meter, and the 4x100 meter races and Mitchell ran the 400 meter, 800 meter, and the 4x100 meter race.
Overall the team won first place in 13 events and is sending 11 athletes to compete in Winter Games Jan. 31-Feb. 2 at Chestnut Mountain in Galena.
Best-selling authors to appear
Best-selling authors Lauren Willig and Tasha Alexander will appear at the Cook Park Library on Feb. 23 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. From Napoleonic France to Victorian London, both authors will take attendees on a journey of love and intrigue! Books will be available for purchase and signing at the event, courtesy of the Lake Forest Bookstore.
Trahan shines in photo contest
The winners of Volo Bog State Natural Area’s 25th Annual Nature Photo Contest were announced between stories and music sets at Volo Bog’s Annual WinterFest on Jan. 8.
Mike Trahan of Mundelein was a big winner.
