Mascot Leroy the Lobster is one of the lures that draws crowds to Mundelein Park & Recreation District’s annual free open house at Barefoot Bay Family Aquatic Center, 1461 N. Midlothian Road. This year’s event is 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 25.
Director of Parks & Recreation Margaret Resnick calls the open house “a dry preview. There is no swimming that night. It’s particularly for people that haven’t been to Barefoot Bay before and want to see what the features are so they’ll be prepared when they bring their children.”
Resnick noted that kids particularly enjoy the event.
“They get to go into the mechanical room and see all the pumps and how that works,” she explained.
Other treats include free samples from the concession stand, chalk drawing, face painting, contests and, of course, posing with Leroy.
“We’re always pleasantly surprised at the number of people that come out,” Resnick said.

There will be a parade to Cook Park led by members of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, where the Libertyville High School Band will perform.
