There will be plenty of airspace at the free family kite fly at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 28, in Vernon Hills’ expansive Century Park.

“It’s part of a statewide program through the Illinois Park and Recreation Association,” said Marty Walsh, recreation supervisor of the Vernon Hills Park District. “They encourage all the park and recreation agencies across the state to host a family kite fly during April or May.”

Walsh reported that each year families get acquainted with other families at the event.

“Next thing you know one parent is helping another child untangle a kite string from a tree,” Walsh said.

Participants should park near the boat dock shelter, 1001 Lakeview Pkwy., and follow the signs to the island shelter.

“They’re welcome to bring their own kites but we will have some kites for sale,” Walsh said.

Call if you wish to purchase one of the $6 kites from the park district.
