Ten-year-old Libertyville boy killed while inner-tubing

Ten-year-old Tony Borcia was described as a leader at his north suburban grammar school, a popular boy whose “smile lit up the room.”
His family and classmates on Sunday were grieving the death of the Libertyville boy, killed when a boat struck him while he was inner-tubing near Lake Villa.
Anthony Borcia was on an inner tube and was being pulled by a boat when another boat struck him around 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Illinois Conservation Police Sgt. Brett Scroggins said.
“It was pretty traumatic,” Scroggins said.
Anthony was killed on Petite Lake on Saturday, Lake County Coroner Artis Yancey. The boy was pronounced dead of blunt-force trauma at the scene, Yancey said.
No one else was injured in the accident.
No charges were filed as of the weekend.
“Tony was the sweetest, nicest boy. His smile lit up the room. He loved his family and his friends to no end. He will be so terribly missed,” his family said in a statement released to the media.
The Borcia family asked that their privacy be respected so they can grieve.
Libertyville Elementary School District 70 released a statement about “Tony,” who was going to be a fifth-grader at Butterfield School. He was known as a leader at his school, according to Butterfield Principal Candice Kehoe.
“Tony was well-liked by the students and loved by the staff. Butterfield’s family has experienced a great loss. We will miss Tony and the positive impact he made among his peers and the school community,” Kehoe said.
Counselors will be available at the school this week to help students and parents. Social workers will also help students cope with the loss the first week of school, which starts Aug. 22.
